What is the historical significance of absinthe, and how has its reputation evolved over time?
The absinthe recipe was invented in the 18th century in the mountains of the Swiss Jura. For about thirty years, absinthe remained a regional drink, and the town of Pontarlier became its capital. It became popular throughout the country thanks to the return of French soldiers from Algeria. In the 20th century, absinthe was banned in France and Switzerland. It was officially reauthorized in France in 2011, but thanks to a decree, its production and sale have been possible again since 1988. Today, absinthe is recognized for its history and distinctive taste.
How is absinthe traditionally prepared and served?
Absinthe is prepared and served according to a very specific ritual. First, the absinthe is poured neat into an absinthe glass, on which an absinthe spoon, also called a “slotted spoon,” is placed. A sugar cube is placed on the spoon, and ice-cold water is poured over it drop by drop. The absinthe is diluted with three to five times its volume of water. The way absinthe is prepared plays a vital role in its final taste because it allows the herbal aromas to be released.
Can absinthe be used in modern cocktail recipes, and if so, what are some examples?
Mythique Absinthe DES TERRES ROUGES can be enjoyed according to the spoon ritual, but it can also be used in modern cocktails such as the Corpse Reviver, which combines absinthe, SALERS gin, and VEDRENNE Triple Sec Liqueur.
